About Cumbria Clinical Exercise

Based at Train to Thrive in Carlisle, Cumbria Clinical Exercise is a specialist service run by a registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist.

We conduct comprehensive assessments and prescribe evidence-based exercise plans to improve your strength and conditioning.

To qualify for our services you must have a current or previous diagnosis of one of the following conditions:

  • Cancer: All types and stages within the cancer care pathway (e.g. prehabilitation, during treatment, post treatment and advanced cancer/palliative care)

  • Cardiac: Including ischaemic heart disease / acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, pacemakers, hypertension, peripheral artery disease (PAD), valvular diseases, cardiomyopathies, and congenital heart disease

  • Metabolic: Including obesity, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidaemia, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

What is a Clinical Exercise Physiologist?

  • A master’s level university qualified health professional equipped with requisite knowledge, skills and competencies to support people living with complex, chronic and multiple long-term conditions.

  • A specialist in performing individual health-fitness assessments, which underpin the design, delivery and evaluation of evidence-based exercise interventions.

  • Trained to evaluate clinical risk, assess physical function, and deliver safe, individualised exercise and behaviour-change interventions tailored to each person’s clinical and psychosocial needs.

  • Recognised by the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) as a registered Healthcare Professional under the Clinical Exercise Physiologist title.
